Be Not Deceived
(I Corinthians 15:29-58)
BE NOT DECEIVED
With hundreds of years of experience in spiritual combat, Satan, the great enemy of every Christian, has been very successful in assembling a number of devices that have enabled him to achieve victory on far too many occasions. These devices include disappointment, discouragement, despair, doubt, disbelief, distraction, double-mindedness, delay, discord, defilement, discontentedness, and many others. But one that has proved effective on a multitude of occasions is his device of deceit.
As I read through I Corinthians chapter 15, this great chapter on the Resurrection, my attention is drawn to a phrase that is found on five different occasions in the pages of Scripture. That phrase is found in verse 33: “BE NOT DECEIVED!”
What does it mean to be deceived? The word “deceive” means to cause someone to believe an untruth; to be false to. To be deceived means that someone or something has caused you to believe something that is not true. What an awful feeling to realize that you have been deceived – to find out you really did not get what you thought you were going to get or that you really did not know someone you thought you truly knew.
In Jeremiah 17:9-10, we are told that the human heart is deceitful. In Obadiah verse 3, we find that we can be deceived by the pride of our own heart. I John 1:8 reaffirms that we can deceive ourselves. II Timothy 3:13 informs us that we can be deceived by evil men. Of course, the devil works wilily to deceive the whole world (Revelation 12:9). The devil is a master imitator or duplicator. For everything good that God has, the devil has an imitation or a counterfeit. Many young Christians today are being deceived by Satan’s counterfeits.
Note the five occurrences in Scripture that we find this command, BE NOT DECEIVED.
I Corinthians 15:33, 34 BE NOT DECEIVED About HEARING and HABITS
Deuteronomy 11:16 BE NOT DECEIVED About WORLDLINESS and WORSHIP
Galatians 6:7-9 BE NOT DECEIVED About SOWING and REAPING
Luke 21:8, 9 BE NOT DECEIVED About CULTS and COMMOTIONS
I Corinthians 6:9, 10 BE NOT DECEIVED About HEAVEN and HELL
The greatest way to combat deception is to become deeply familiar with the Truth – the truth of God’s Word (John 17:17). We must read, study, memorize, and meditate on the Word of God so that we do not become another one of Satan’s casualties. True success in the Christian life depends on it (Joshua 1:8).
